Minister Charles Loring Brace and a team of business people wanted to help the thousands of homeless and mistreated children they were witness to throughout New York City. Their remedy: relocate these children to developing rural areas in the United States in need of labor. From 1854 to 1929 under the auspices of the Children's Aid Society, approximately a quarter million children were shipped to 49 states and Indian Territory, where, though send under good intentions, were often treated as slave labor, abused and bounced around from farm to farm. Many other placing agencies began helping "place out" the children in the 75 years of the Orphan Train, including the New York Foundling  Hospital, New York Home for Little Wanderers,  New York  Juvenile  Asylum,  Chicago Home

Society, Minnesota Home Society and the Salvation Army, as well as several others. After traveling over 8,000 miles, Charlotte Endorf interviews now grown orphans. Enhanced with photographs, portraits, music and much more. An educational keepsake for all ages.
