"My husband and I were on a search for more information regarding the Christian Orphan's Home and the Christian Children's Home of Phelps County, Nebraska. It existed from 1889 to 1954. Many listeners in our talks have told us to stop by the Nebraska Prairie Museum the next time we're in Holdrege, Nebraska. So, we did! They were right! It is, perhaps, one of Nebraska's best kept secrets. We found a wonderful display as well as a great book by the Holdrege Area Genealogy Club.
We also found we'll most certainly need to return with both the kids and more time. It's the home of the World Famous WWII German POW Interpretive Center! There are over 65,000 feet of interior exhibits. A town square features authentic buildings. So many collections...sports, china, figurines, license plates, model airplanes and spoons. Almost everything you can imagine on the prairie you will experience!
As archivist, Cheryl Mill, told Nebraska Life magazine when featured in their September/October issue 2005, "Almost everything has been donated - so much that large items on display often store smaller items inside. It's a running joke among museum staff that there isn't one drawer in this museum that doesn't have something in it." Cheryl warned us when we arrived about the 65,000 feet and the possibility of getting lost. She was correct. I lost my husband! Or should I say, he lost me. Cheryl came to the rescue with her surveilance camera and scooter. He was slightly hard to find dressed in 1800's costume ready for our next school to perform at. He blended right into the museum. But our searching eyes found him. We know one thing for certain, we'll be back real soon!"
